We have a goal set!
When asking Coach Higgins what he expected this season from boys soccer he replied with a chuckle, “State Championship.” Although he considers all his players great players, his team captains are Will Parent, Brantton Greene, and William Khemmanivanh. His goal for this season? To score more than the other team, of course. Coach Higgins stresses the importance of putting the right players in the right positions and the team studies game plans and formations to prep for their, always important, area games. On a typical day, the team’s practice consist of warm ups, drills, dribbling, and a scrimmage. Coach Higgins loves to see their hard work payoff, but his main priority is to build good, productive young men not just good soccer players.
Although a State Championship may seem out of reach that’s where Alma Bryant’s, Coach Donald, says he has his eyes set. The team practices for hours on drills and passing to get ready for big area games, especially Theodore and Baker. Each player plays a role in keeping the team strong. For example, Penny Thongvanh is their leading scorer, while Katie Rogers is their best defensive player. Their strongest passer is Melisa Wongsa and Mary Brown is their goal keeper. Coach Donald demands excellence from every one of his players and it shows on and off the field, considering three of his senior players are ranked top ten in their class.
We wish our boys' and girls’ soccer teams the best of luck this year. Go Canes!
