welcome coach hunter

Blount High School is proud to announce the hiring of Coach Shumbe Hunter as the new head coach of the boys basketball program. The announcement was made by Principal Jerome Woods on Tuesday afternoon.

Coach Hunter brings a championship pedigree and a legacy of success to the Leopards. He previously led Williamson High School to the 2020 Class 4A state title and guided the team to multiple deep playoff runs, including the Elite 8 in 2022. Under his leadership, Williamson won its area championship five times in six seasons. His coaching résumé also includes all-star game appearances and a successful tenure at Foley High School, where he led the team to a Class 6A, Area 3 title in 2012.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Hunter to the Blount basketball family,” said Principal Woods. “He is a proven winner, disciplinarian, and state champion. I’ve admired his leadership and the intensity with which his teams compete. He brings the kind of energy and command we value here at Blount.”

In his official statement, Coach Hunter expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to lead at Blount. “I am embracing another opportunity to add value—not just athletically, but to the lives I am about to come in contact with,” he said. “Blount has a championship atmosphere and a supportive environment that’s hard to find. I’m excited to become part of this special community.”

Coach Hunter emphasized his commitment to high expectations both on and off the court. “My staff and I have always worked to create cultures of success—in the classroom, in the community, and in competition. That will continue at Blount.”

Blount High School looks forward to the future of the boys basketball program under Coach Hunter’s leadership and is confident he will inspire excellence in our student-athletes.
